Local Reads: Your Preschooler's Summer Reading List, Part One

July 14, 2009

It's Tuesday, and that means it's List Day here at Savvy Source. For today's List, in honor of summer, reading locally and keeping you and your preschoolers occupied indoors to escape the 100+ degree temps, I have compiled a list of books written for preschoolers by members of the Austin Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. I found a dozen books, so today I'll introduce you to the first six, along with their descriptions (written by reviewers or publishers):

Hidden Gem: Reed Park

May 04, 2009

Today I bring you another Hidden Gem: Reed Park in Central Austin. Basically hidden from the road, you might have trouble finding it, even if you are looking. When we were checking out library storytimes, we headed to Reed after visiting the Howson branch.

On the Road Again: Staying Sane During Your Next Road Trip

April 28, 2009

Summer will be here before we know it, and if you are like our family, you'll do at least one road trip before Labor Day. We'll actually be heading to Port Aransas in a few weeks so we can take advantage of off-peak rates and smaller crowds to enjoy the Texas coast. With that in mind, we've already started thinking about our four-hour car ride and how to make it as painless as possible. So, for today's List, here are some tips from our family to yours on making your next road trip a success:

East Side Finds

April 27, 2009

Austin's "Upper East Side" (I had never heard of the name until I saw it on a bumper sticker) has garnered a lot of attention, particularly since folks started moving into the Mueller development. But don't forget, there is a lot more to East Austin than Lake Park! Here are just a few things you should check out:

Calling all bookworms-in-training

January 22, 2009

We LOVE the library. Although, much to my chagrin, my son has no interest in actually sitting through a storytime , library books are like gold. Seriously, it's like Christmas around here when I come home with new books. We have a decent selection of books at our house, but nothing beats a constant stream of new books to liven up our regular rotation. Other mamas had told me that  Read more...

Free Fun Every Day of the Week in Austin

January 08, 2009

Everyone is watching their wallets these days, and if you stay at home with your little ones, it's easy for a $5 admission "every once in a while" to add up. Also, if you are like me, credit card bills are now arriving, documenting how much you REALLY spent this holiday season. But we are lucky here in Austin, as there are lots of free family-friendly options right in our own backyard.  Read more...

What Matters & What Doesn't to My Little Austinite

January 06, 2009

This month's theme at Savvy Source is Resolutions and Reflections, and Tuesday is List Day. Today's list is about what really matters to preschoolers - and what doesn't. For a local spin, I've chosen to reflect on the Austin sights that my preschooler really digs (sometimes literally!) and what I've been surprised he hasn't taken to...at least not yet. Top 5 Austin Institutions My  Read more...
