Who's That I See? Why, It's Me!

January 13, 2009

It's List Day again here at Savvy Source.

Since this month's theme is Resolutions and Reflections, my assignment is to suggest places your preschooler can see his or her reflection.

Here are some of our favorites:

  • Just south of Lou Neff Point on Ladybird Lake.  The quintessential duck feeding spot in Austin, and in walking distance from the tunes of Trail fixture Woode Wood.
  • Mayfield Park in Central Austin.  This park has trails, duck ponds, community gardens, and is perhaps best known for its peacocks.
  • Mozart's Coffee, in West Austin where Lake Austin Boulevard ends near Redbud Isle.  In addition to your reflection, you can see boats, fish, ducks, and the Tom Miller Dam.
  • The Japanese Garden at the Zilker Botanical Gardens.  A long-time favorite for Austin photographers, there is plenty of room to roam at the Garden, and your child can explore the many paths and watch the fish.  (Note:  NOT STROLLER FRIENDLY.)
  • Lake Park at the Mueller Development in Central East Austin.  This new park is large and has a great playground nearby.  It is open to the public and has steps leading down to the water.
  • Bull Creek Greenbelt in Northwest Austin.  There are many entry points to this greenbelt (there is even an Upper and a Lower) and we have spent several mornings throwing rocks, splashing around, and hiking and exploring and always seem to have the place to ourselves.
  • The fountains at the Arboretum in North Central Austin.  A smaller fountain is located near Amy's Ice Cream, and the water runs down into a larger fountain down near the famous cows.  The larger fountain is perfect for penny-throwing/wish-making/reflection-seeking and my son has enjoyed putting sticks and seeds up near the smaller fountain and watching them float down to the larger fountain.

The great thing about all these places is that they are good to visit when other plans might have fallen through, or when your kid is too sick to hang out with friends but wants to get out of the house.
